Overclocking, FSB and Multi

just a quick question, when Danny OC'ed his Q6600 to 3.4GHz he set the FSB to 1700 and the Multi to x8. when OC'ing why lower the multi and rasie the FSB? can you not keep multi at 9 and put the FSB up to whatever.
Thanks

your overclock is dependent on multiple factors. if one of these are stressed more so when you're upping the multiplier, than if you had the FSB, then your overclock is stunted. also, when you overclock the FSB you're also increasing other factors that're dependant on the FSB (northbridge, ram, etc)
in my experience an overclock with multipliers will get you higher clock speeds, but, i've gotten higher scores on 3dmark06 CPU when my cpu was at 3.2ghz with a 14x multi (so 3ghz) and raising the fsb to (what i believe was) 211mhz.

I know in my case I was able to reach the same speed with both a 9x and a 7x multiplier. So having a lower multiplier could give you the same clock speed, but a much higher FSB.
