Overclocking laptop

I just purchased my first comp, others were hand-me-downs from friends and family. It is a laptop, Dell inspiron 1545, Dual-core [email protected], 3 GB ram. Its not much but for my job its ok for now. My question is that the store wanted to charge me about 70 bucks to get ride of some options I dont need and increase the processor 18%. Is this something I can do myself? I have limited comp. knowledge but I now heat is a issue. Thank you.

I would say no to overclocking a laptop. It really just comes down to what a laptops purpose is. They are made so you can surf the web, write word documents and so on. If you are going to be using it for anything else then you should sell it and look into a desktop. The extra performance of overclocking the laptop (and thats even if you are able to, most laptop bios's have no OC features) would not warrant the loss of battery life as well as all the extra heat that would be created. Just keep it stock man you will be better off IMO.

I'm guessing what the store meat is remove certain applications that come pre-installed with the computer and maybe other stuff to increase the overall efficiency of the computer.

If they meant to actually overclock the processor then you can't do it yourself. Most of the time, the overclocking features on BIOS of OEM computers come locked. I don't think Dell overclocks computers anyways, and overclocking a laptop as mentioned before, is not a good idea, due to heat issues.

I could see you waking up in the morning with a laptop melted to your desk :P

I'd save for a desktop to game on. I have never and will never own a laptop though, so I might be a little bias..
