overclocking my AMD 3400

lovely?

as is well known, my processor is very out of date. it is running currently at stock speeds of 2.4GHZ, and is the fastest core for the AMD 754 socket.

my problem is i dont know if i can overclock my core speeds to anything more then what they are currently at, because i dont know the limits of my motherboard. it is an old gigabyte, 2 ddr ram slots, one AGP 8X slot, and 2 or 3 pci slots (cant remember as it is in the shop right now)

i have gone through my bios, and the multiplier seems to already be at the top, 12 or something like that...

so is there any way to overclock this processor? i have an awesome cooler on it and it always stays under 30C under full load, so heat is not an issue and im positive i could push 3GHZ.

thx, matt

Well they made a Athlon 64 3700 for the 754 too. Just drop your ram from 400 to 333, lower your Hypertransport from 4X to 3X and start raising your FSB up alittle at a time till it gets unstable then back off some. If you want to get higher you can raise your CPU voltage but just keep a check on your temp.

well like i said (by the way, this cooler was actually made for an AM2 90nm X2 6000) heat surely wont be an issue, but you think that i have to lower my ram speed? hmm i wonder if that will affect my performance more then my overclock?

anyways, when i get the pc back ill try that out, thanks for the advice stranglehold.

EDIT: stranglehold your right though, i did not know of the 3700. the only difference in my processor and this one though is the cache, this one boasts 1MB of cache, i thought that 512 was the max on a 754 board. but at 250$ i doubt it'll be my next upgrade! lol

When you start raising your FSB the ram and Hypertransport bus will start raising back up to. You can leave your ram at stock settings and raise the voltage on the ram if it starts getting unstable.

i see so lowering the ram speeds compensates this?

also, you believe that i should be able to do those things through a program? or bios? and also what does anyone think i should set my FSB to begin with? i dont really have five hours to get a 10% performance increase unfortunetely...

bump i have run into a problem overclocking my cpu...

when i look into my motherboard's bios settings there is only one area i can change, and it is set stock to 200. the i raised that first to 210 and i got an increase to about 2.5GHZ, which is not bad i believe, but i sure want a hell of alot more then that. my problem is that i dont know how (or if its possible with my bios) to change my ram speed and also if i try to make the 200 go to 220 my computer will not boot. right now i have it stable at 2.6GHZ at 215 but im not sure where to go from here.

After you bring up the bios for a Gigabyte board press Ctrl and F1 at the same time and it opens more overclocking features

ahh your my best friend stranglehold thank you! this is gonna be great im overclocking my proc, and actually flashing my video card to an X850XT right now too! (flashing 12 pipes into 16, because mine is one of the few that isnt laser cut)

Dont know why Gigabyte hides features like that. Alot of people that have them say, well my Gigabyte doesnt have much overclocking features and never know that Ctrl+F1 opens them up. I use to mod old 9800se that way and unlock pipelines that had been disabled comparied to the 9800 pro.

hmm hypertransport? i dont exactly know where to find that...
pressing F1+CTRL on the bios did bring up another tab that displays the memory timing tables and whatnot, and the original was 200, and i brought it down to 166, then moved onto the section titled 'voltages and frequencies' and upped my original speed from 200 to 225, but thats as high as i have been able to get. (oh and this was with a 5% increase in voltage)

well 3dmark 03 scored me about 1000 points up from 3300 to 4300, so thats pretty good, but check out what my new X800XL can do!

lol im pretty sure thats wrong but its still cool!

On a 754 Gigabyte board I have its under Frequency/Voltage control listed as K8<->NB HT Speed, it has 1X-4X drop it to 3X

it is ati tray tools, actually omega i think you would like it, its like atitool but better, and it has an auto overclocking feature, all in all a very nice program, even though the benchmarks can be misleading

oh and stranglehold the only thing that says K8 in that tab is something like 'k8 clock control' and it allows me to change my multiplier to a max of 2400MHZ

Oh, VIA chipset. Not good overclockers and not much Bios settings plus I dont think its PCI bus is locked either so about 216 to 220 is about as high as you will get because the PCI bus will go unstable

yeah i have it stable right now at 225 but thats it, unfortunetely my motherboard it whats holding me back, instead of my processor or heat like most cases.... too bad i guess, ill just have to wait for my upandcoming E6750 rig!

but anyways thanks stranglehold! even a few hundred MHZ up is allowing me to play oblivion on ultra settings 1280/1024 and 2x AA (although my new 'X850XT' helps too lol)
