Overclocking my Phenom II 955 with a CM Hyper 212+

I haven't actually tried any overclocking yet with this cooler. I know basically you just bump up the multiplier bit by bit and test each time. Not sure what voltage does exactly and not sure I want to mess with it either. Using the stock paste that came with the cooler.

Tips?

How far should I be able to get? I'm thinking getting it 3.8 stable if possible.

The higher the multiplier you use, the more voltage you need to use. Don't go crazy on the voltage though, because more voltage = more heat. You want to keep the voltage as low as possible whilst keeping the multiplier as high as possible. You should really test each of your overclocks for stability using something like Prime95 and also check the temperatures at the same time.

I don't know for sure (as I've never overclocked a Phenom II), but for 3.8GHz you may need to bump the voltage up just a tad.

Idk, but I think you should be able to reach 4+ in terms of temps. The voltage and stabilty will be more to concern with a phenom...

Shoot for 3.8. That was a decent OC for that generation. Keep the temps under 55c when stability testing. The max is 62c but you do not want to be on the edge when testing. Just for a reference my 955 was not a good OCer and I got it to 3.8GHz at 1.45v.

EDIT: also the max voltage for the chip was 1.55v if I remeber correctly. Try to keep it under 1.5v as long as the temps are in a good range.

Got it to 4.0 without breaking a sweat in the slightest.

Hit 3.8 with no voltage changes. Running at 4.0 GHz with a 1.44 voltage IIRC. Didn't even break 50 when playing GTA4. I could probably push it farther...

Idles at 36 or so.

Run Prime95 for at least an hour and check temps. If temps are good and no bluescreens then its stable.

Yes I agree you still need to stress test it, I'd say for longer than an hour though, maybe for a 5 or 6 hours, just to be really sure. Check your temps as well, you don't want them straying over 60C.

I'll be at work for 6 hours today. May leave it on and stress test it. Is it okay if I'm absent while it does this? I'll have HWMonitor to up to see the max temps.

Yeah should be all right, so long as you can find out what the max temp was, it should be all right. :)
