Sorry I put this in another thread (wrong one). So here goes.

Could someone explain the mechanics of overclocking the Intel Q6600 2 core quad processor.

someone said........Q6600 -Great processor - especially for the price. As an added bonus, this thing is so easy overclock and it overclocks so much it's nuts.

A lot of Q6600's are great overclockers, however overclocking entails more than just the processor model... it depends on the individual chip, the RAM that you're running, and the motehrboard that you're overclocking with. You could take my Q6600 that runs at 3.6 GHz, drop it in a cheap motherboard with cheap RAM, and it won't hit 3.2 GHz. It's not the chip, its the compoents.

Before I can really make any comments, I need to know your system specs. (Maybe consider putting it in your sig like a lot of us?)

your base frequency is 266mhz. the cpu multiplier is 9 for a result of about 2.4ghz (266*9=2394). your fsb is always just a quad-pumped base frequency so 266*4=1064mhz fsb. your memory also runs at a certain frequency based upon the base frequency, depending on what multiplier you want to run it at, options are dependent on motherboard settings. generally leave it at 2x your base frequency to start and try overclocking that after you've found your cpu's max, or your fsb's max, whichever comes first.

lets say you raise the base frequency from 266mhz to 333mhz (raising 5mhz at a time and booting windows each time) and it boots stable. now you multiply it by everything 333*9= 2997mhz cpu speed (3ghz) 333*4=1332mhz fsb frequency and 333*2=666mhz ram frequency.

its that easy, just make sure you have some after-market cooling, and that you apply it all correctly and you check the cpu temperatures before you start overclocking.

vv also, for general rules for overclocking the forum has an entire thread just explaining how it works.
