Hey everyone
I bought this amazing Asus P5B motherboard, after being stuck with an Intel motherboard. The problem is, it has horrible Vdroop. It is astounding.
Take for instance, my attempts at overclocking today. After a quick check, it has a drop of 0.1V right off the bat. So, 1.6V = 1.5V. Then, under load, it gets even bigger. I have it at 265x14=3710, with the BIOS set at 1.625V (right at it's "red" warning level"), and during Prime95 (dual instances) the Vcore drops to 1.35V, and of course it crashes. I just can't get anywhere past 265FSB (of course I'm not putting the Vcore any more, as it is at around 1.49V idle). Everywhere past 265 it will boot, but it won't POST. It is a queer place to do it, since 266FSB is the next "standard".
I know there is a mod for the ASUS board, but I'd have to do some serious research and practice before I do that. Though I'm really curious what this processor will do when it is fed even a low 1.4V steady. I mean, who do you know has a Pentium D 820 that can survive at 1.35V, even for a minute?
.
And yes, I have a decent PSU: Ultra X2 550w
If you have any suggestions for the pencil mod, or soldering, I'd be glad to hear them!
