overclocking

I'm using Atitool to overclock my 7600gt and I'm using the built in find max core and memory speed buttons. The memory one worked fine, it found the max stable speed great but when I click the core one my computer goes super slow and freezes every few seconds(then comes back to super slow)everything is slow from the program itself to the mouse movements.

Is this normal because it's testing my gpu core or is there something else going on?

Also if in fact Atitool just isn't working for me I need suggestions for other programs or guides on overclocking graphics cards

10-20 seconds to wait for artifacts to appear is a good length, maybe wait a little longer if you think that the gfx card is pushing the limits for oc.

Don't use the automatic overclock function, I don't like it. Don't be lazy and do it yourself. Starting from stock, ramp up the clock speed 20Mhz at a time, benchmarking after each one, until you get to a stable clock speed, then do the same for the RAM's clock speed.

Its a time consuming process, but that is the safest way you can take.

default core clock is 580 for 3D performance

after getting up to 610(including manually)it slows down my comp a ton

elitehacker I think you're right I'll never use the auto feature again I lowered the speed that it gave me by 20mhz and still got extreme artifacts in real life testing(FEAR and BF2)but after I lowered it more I also got artifacts in games when atitool ran for 1 and a half hours with no errors?

You should do it yourself, ramp it up bit by bit until you get artifacts and then ease back. You should be able to go to around 650Mhz easily with a 7600GT, if you can't then it can be due to heat or other factors. In general nvidia cards have huge overclocking headroom. I used ntune and I tried the "find optimal clock speed" option and that froze my computer. -_-

Well, from experience, I have benchmarked two 7600GT, a Sparkle and a XFX one, and they both made the 650Mhz with no problems.

seems strange that I haven't been able to get mine over 610 on the core without slowdown and 800 mem without artifacts? my temps are 75C max
