overheating after System Recovery. What gives?

I restored my Sony Vaio FRV28 laptop. Since then its been suddenly cutting off when doing something that uses alot of processing. I guess its overheating but the fans still work. What happened? How do I fix it? If I do a clean install of XP Pro instead of restoring to XP Home could that fix it? Ive checked to see if there is a BIOS upgrade for my computer but there arent any.
I really dont want to buy another computer.
 
restored it because it was slow after 3 yrs of use. Youtube would hardly work and browsers and itunes took awhile to open. All that is fixed now, but now I got a bigger problem with it shutting off suddenly.
