Overheating graphics card?

While playing GMOD I noticed I was getting "low-fps-spikes", the fps just dropped to a very low level for a while and then "climbed" back up to a playable level. I touched my graphics cards heatsink and it felt a bit hot but not as hot before overclocking, when I overclocked I put a 120mm fan to blow cold air toward the graphics card. I did recently take away the "windtunnel" I had made of cardboard to make all the cold air go directly on the graphics card. Are the "low-fps-spikes" caused by overheating cause I can't see any artifacts.
 
Maybe I'm wrong, but perhaps you're just expecting too much out of that card... I mean really, that card isn't a power house...
 
GMOD is VERY cpu intensive, and the problem is most likely your processor. even with my processor it can lag down during some of the larger explosions and stuff.

Well, the thing is I've been playing GMOD since v5 with lower specs (non-overclocked hardware) and it's been running smoothly. The slowing down hasn't happened before today.
 
When you say low FPs spikes what do you mean. Do they stay low for 5 minutes at a time? A few seconds? When a lot of shooting/explosions happens?
 
For instance when I'm in gm_construct and I walk around, I can suddenly get a low fps spike which lasts for a few seconds and then goes away. Then it does it again after while. Even if there isn't a lot of exploding going on or a lot of stuff like NPCs or stuff on the screen.
 
why would moving files stop him from getting low fps spikes, half the time i defrag stuff actually goes where i dont need it to causing errors and slower performance


ive had the same problem once or twice a year or 2 ago when i had a geforce fx 5500.... and reinstalling my video card drivers fixed the problem try that

if to no avail could just be the card has, had its day

also im not sure i read right but did these spikes start ocurring b4 or after the overclock .... if after, then put it back to stock

if your not sure its hot or not go to your local electronics/hardware store and get a small temp probe and underload check out the temps

most of the time i defrag, it helps me out alot, especially in games, when it needs to cache to the harddrive
 
The low fps spikes started recently, but so far only in Source games. And it's after the overclock which I did quite a long time ago, I'll try defragmenting and updating my graphics card drivers. But I think I should re-install Windows soon, I'll do that when I get my GF6600GT and a new PSU (hopefully soon).

yea defragmenting and a new video card would do your computer alot of good...
definitely an old setup lol thats probly why you're lagging
