Overheating Graphics Card!!

I built a computer about a month ago, it a 3700+ processor, MSI motherboard, and has a GeForce 6600 GT GFX card. Up un untill recently it has been fine but 3 days ago, while playing a game the screen it started to flicker green. I turned the computer off and left it for a while. then came back to it... it ran fine in windows and anyother ptogram that doesn't require high GFX. I checked the Temprture of the graphics card and noticed it was high even in windows- 40*c, and got up to 45*c while playing games ( 44*c is when it starts flickering). The case i have it in is well ventilated and nothings in contact with the GFX card. I have not overclocked my GFX card and now i have the side off to keep it cool. Should i be worrying and how can i fix this problem.
 
Are the fans spinning on the gfx card?

If they are, the card might have just broken. Mine did it a little while ago, after being about 10 months old. Warranty replaced it. :)
 
Yes spinning is great... Im not sure about temperatures, if it is restarting the pc then there is problems.
 
no it doesn't... I have contacted the manufacturer to see what they say. Just reading through the forums on reads that his GRX card was destroyed by overheating. Is there any chance that might happen?
 
ehh, the temperature isn't really that high, my friend has a pair of 6600gts and he idles mid 40's, and when he plays games it goes into the 50's.
 
hmmm... i've realised that as soon as it goes up by bout 5*c it starts flickering... could it be a software problem? Anyone else who has had this card got any suggestions?
 
Could be defective. My friend bought an EVGA 6800 from Newegg and it would idle at about 90°C and go up to 110°C when playing games. He called up customer service and they just told him to send it back because it shouldn't have been running that hot.
 
Video cards can generally get up to 75-80C without problems, so I doubt it is a GPU overheating problem.

Try underclocking your video card by 20-25MHz and see if that helps any at all. If it does help, then it might be the memory. I'd apply for an RMA if that happens to be the case.
