Overheating Problem?

I have a older HP ze1000 laptop. It has an AMD (not sure which) processor, small hard drive, etc. Very basic machine. I don't do any heavy duty gaming or anything, just browsing and playing yahoo games. Anyway, I recently took the case apart and replaced the power adapter jack on the MOBO. After I put it back together, it was charging correctly and seemed to be working perfectly. Then it turned itself off. I restarted it, same thing, several times; it won't stay on longer than 10 minutes, tops.
When I had the fan and heatsink out, I inadvertently put the heatsink down on a glass surface, and probably wiped all the cooling compound off. So I took it all apart and applied the cooling compound. Still same problem. While it IS on, I don't hear my fan running. Is it possible that the fan is just not cooling and it is simply overheating? Or is something bigger possibly causing my problem, and what might that be?
Thanks for any suggestions.

I most definitely may have incorrectly connected the fan once. However, once I reassembled the thing, I made certain to attach the connection firmly in place.
Is that the most likely culprit? Does it sound as if permanent damage is done to the MOBO? I don't mine spending time cracking the case - nor do I mind a few bucks for a new fan. As I have said, it is just a recreational machine, though. A new MOBO or some other big ticket item will send my poor lil laptop to the big HeatSink in the sky

Thanks again

ok... seems to me that your fan has gone out...
i don't think your mobo is affected

there are a few options you can do...
- buy a new laptop :D:D (which i doubt you want to do, i might be wrong :))
- get a new fan for the laptop (make sure the dimensions are correct before buying the fan)
- get a notebook cooling pad.

(targus seems to be a pretty famous brand for laptop accessories)

EDIT: i was looking around in newegg but i can't find an internal fan for laptop... its not that common, so i guess the 2nd option is out then...
