Overheating/turn off issue

Hey - so I'm not the most computer savvy person, but I do know that when you put your computer in a bag you need to turn it to sleep so that it doesn't overheat.

I've got a fairly new (to me) Lenovo Thinkpad laptop and I've upgraded to Windows 10.

Well, when I left today, I put my computer to "sleep" and put it in the bag and walked out the door. A few hours later when I went to pull it out of the bag, it was extremely hot and appeared to be on (evidenced by a light that is on the front of the laptop). I'm not sure why it came back on or how to prevent this from happening.

I've played around with it - turned it to sleep and closed the lid. 20 seconds later the light comes back on and I can hear the fan running. So next, I went in and checked and changed the settings so that when I close the lid the computer goes to "hibernate." I put it to sleep, closed the lid and again it comes back on....

Not sure how to avoid this issue and wondering if anyone else has any experience with this?

Thanks in advance!

You need to shut down the laptop totally when putting it in a bag and transporting it. You are taking a chance of hard drive crashing with it on and transporting it.

Ok, thanks for the comment johnb35.

However, this still doesn't solve the issue.

In addition, I thought that when you put it to sleep/hibernate the hard drive wasn't running anymore? I thought that was the point of putting it to sleep/hibernate, so that the harddrive could "rest." Anyone else have experience with this? Do you all shut down your computer when transporting it in a bag?

It doesn't sound like your laptop didn't fully go to sleep, but froze while doing so, leaving the PC on after you put it in the bag.

Ideally it shouldn't be waking up once you have it in sleep unless you hit power or something.

This might help:

Beers! You are totally right! I think this is the problem. I put my computer to sleep, close the lid and it comes back on ....BECAUSE I have a wireless mouse that I throw in the bag with it...which inevitably moves around, gets clicked, whatever! I just did a test with it - put the computer to sleep, closed the lid....everything was fine - until I ctouched the mouse and it came back to life. Therefore, the solution is to turn the mouse off and turn the computer to sleep so it will not wake back up and overheat in my bag.

Thanks so much!

I think I owe you a beer. :)

I have had a similar problem before because I shut it down with out closing all the programs and Word was holding things up by asking to save.
