my computer has been turning off randomly over the past few days.

usually in the middle of a game.

thinking it was over heating i got some thermal compound and put that on about an hour ago.

it has turned off about 6 times since then.

everest and speedfan report low temps. like 30-36*C

the bios says about 45 at startup.

would it still be overheating?

usually my system beeps when it reaches 60*C

also i have to turn off the power supply switch for like 3 seconds before i can turn my pc back on.

any ideas as to what might be going on?

thanks

Did you set any fan speed alarms in the bios? On some boards when the fan speeds go down below a certain point you may not hear an audio alert but see a shutdown since those temps are within reason. 60C is probably the overheat protection alert going off at that high a temp suggesting another problem.

i didnt have the fan fail warnings on until just after i applied the TP... they are on now tho.

The same thing happened to my brother's computer. What I did to fix that was to change the CPU fan into the one that functions better. In my case, it's the CPU that overheats and it cause a random shutdown during gaming sessions.

i dont think i have the money for that lol.

im already asking for an 8800gts and a power supply for xmas.

no spare money

Get some Arctic Silver 5, clean out the fan, and maybe get some case fans...

lol i already have tp. i think the problem isnt with that. the fan has been cleaned and i dont have power connectors for more case fans.

so should i be trying to get a new heatsink/fan?

i just tried stopping the fan with my fingers and immediately get a warning. so i dont think this is a fan failure problem.

i had this problem with my old computer,
it turned out the be a faulty power supply...

what psu do you have installed?

bliss 350 watt.

that would make sense.

cos otherwise i would get overheating warnings or fan fail alerts

yes, thats probabally what it is then... running your system in your signature, a 350 watt wouldn't be too reliable...

well when i get my 8800 gts im gonna have to get a new one anyway. so ill do it now and then see. thanks for the help everyone
