override max memory?

I have a very old Compaq Presario 5838 and I am planning on upgrading. I was wondering though if I could add more memory than the max memory. The computer supposedly maxes out at 384MB memory but is there a way i can add more than that? or override the max value?

256 + 128 = 384 MB
If your motherboard can only support 2 slots and 384MB, there is no way to "override" or "increase" the max value.

The specifications seen at http://support.radioshack.com/support_computer/doc57/57594.htm show that this model takes no larger then 256mb PC100 simms per slot. Installing any 512mb modules won't work. You're essetially stuck with the max there. One idea would be to increase virtual ram however.
