p5s-mx se Motherboard

So today i upgraded my pc, changing my gfx card and trying to change my processor.

I had:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6420 and wanted to upgrade to a Quad Core Q9400.
There both 775 chips.
I put the processor in and it fitted alright, put the heatsync in and had no problems but when I turned it on it failed to work, the fans spun and the harddrive made sounds but nothing else happened.
My motherboard is quite old and i just need confirmation before changing, so can somebody tell me if an ASUS p5s-mx se can take a quad core processor. Help would be appricated.
