when it boots the cpu fan is running quikely after a second or so there is one beep and the fan slows down then it will go to load windows and the power will go out it still happens when you go into bios, the only time the pc doesnt have the power go out is on the odd occasion when you boot it up and it doesnt beep and the screen doesnt come on the pc just seems to run with nothing happening.

i will try am i right in thinking if there was something causing a short the mobo would go out instantlly

If there is a direct short then yes it will go out instantly. But it could be a thermal short, where the expansion of a component due to heat causes a short. When it cools off the short goes away, very rare condition though. Or it could be just over heating in general, most motherboards detect when over heating occurs and will shut down the power.

What model packard are you running?

thanks for your help i have solved it ,i pluged the cpu fan into a normal fan header on the mobo and then i pluged a spare fan i had onto the cpu header and it worked so i could go into bios and alter some of the settings.
