I was playing with it. tried using the ruler and don't know what the measurement is. 0, 100, 200, 300 etc. i was trying to get a measurement of 4x5-1/4. Its not inches". Can't find a way to change it either.
any suggestions?
thanks for the help.

actually ive never used it. figuring there all the same for the operating systems.
i did get it after printing about 4 times.

I'm pretty sure the ruler is in pixels, I'm not sure if you can change it but if you can make a new image in inches you could calculate the ratio of pixels to inch, or possibly set it yourself.

your right. i tried a few different ways but thought there was a way to change. Else i would have to print 1st. i was curious though. Its a simple program and don't care or use all the features in the others ive used. My wife mostly. just wondering what i was missing.
thanks though

In many respects, physical size is irrelevant with digital imaging. The only time you need to know that is when you print it. If you are a pro doing printing then it may be more important - even then it is more of concern in vector graphics, not bitmap graphics.

You can print any picture, any size, any time. You only have to specify the size at the print stage. The only thing you have to bear in mind is you need a lot of pixels for a decent photographic quality print. Something like 1024x768 may be OK for a very small print but for any sort of size you need pixel dimensions in the thousands eg 2400x1500 and up

Physical size = pixel dimension / dpi (where dpi is actually pixels per inch/cm etc) so a 300 dpi image, 2400x1500 pixels would be 8"x5". However if you told your printer to print at 16"x10", that is what it would do but any faults would be more obvious.

thats interesting thanks. My wife buys a frame and i had to make it fit.
Me, i will print it, what ever it is and find a frame for the approximate size.
its something to run with. I dont print many either. it was one and was playing. I email to walmart, walgreen etc. i can have them printed regular pictures on line and get a price like 9 cents. its expensive to print your self and try to avoid it. I can email a hundred pictures and get a better deal and mailed to the house. that works for me mostly.
thanks for the support.

Another way to look at the topic in a familiar way is scanning. Most users will know that 150dpi is everyday quality, 300dpi a lot better etc. So if you scanned a 6"x4" print at 150dpi, it would be 900x600 pixels; 300dpi 1800x1200 pixels;1200dpi 7200x4800 pixels.

The default is pixels but you can change to inches by clicking on the File menu, then Properties or you can use Ctrl-E to bring up the properties. There you can set Units to Pixels, Centimeters or Inches.

Damn, i looked everywhere and did not see it. Never the less thanks. Makes me feel stupid. its set in stone now.
