Anyone got any suggestions I would like it to be freeware please. All I want ti for is to back up my OS on a partion of the HDD encase I need to reformat and screw things up.

Thanks

p.s. I heared that vista had its own software to partion things (I think) any comeback on that?

The partitioning tools seen with either 32 or 64bit versions of Vista are far improved over XP's by a long shot now seeing the option of even formatting a partition or resizing one when booting from the installation disk. The 64bit versions of XP and Vista both run on NTFS type primary partitions.

Besides the Windows tools available including the new Disk Management tool in Vista you can use a live for cd version of GParted for that and later use the DM to see it formatted and ready for use. If the drive is properly detected and seen in the DM all you have to do there is right click on the rectangular bar representing the drive and select the create new partition option. Once created right click there again to choose the format option and even choose the drive letter from a drop down list of letters available. It goes faster there.
