partition for os only

my laptop has its system files on the d drive and i would like to do that for my pc as well and i would also like to lock the drive so no crap files end up on it. any one got any ideas on the matter

That actually is not a good idea. If you try to use the recovery console or a lot of other repair programs they can not find your boot partition ( that is the "d" drive, Gates nade a mistake at a lecture, got them mixed up , so the term stayed that way). Also having a seperate system and boot partition you can lock yourself out of your OS real easy.
