Partition Question

I have an old Millenium Edition Sony Vaio that has a C & D drive. Everything is pretty much full in the C drive & im getting a low disk space warning. Being a "rookie" at this how do i get the D drive to start kicking in & start taking data or do i have to remove the partition?

If you have nothing on your D drive, you could just remove it if it's not important. However, on older installs and os's such as yours, the extra partition, like that of yours is usually where all the backup drivers and such for your pc is installed. How much disk space is available for use on your D? If you still have a fair amount, you can resize it to give more room for your main, C drive.

To resize, you might need a tool such as GParted Live Disc which is free or Partition Magic.

If there is a good amount of free space on the secondary partition you could use two explorer windows to copy files from the primary to newly created folders on the "D" partition. Once copied there simply delete them off of the "C" primary. This will free drive space on the primary needed for swap files. You will also notice that the system will then be running faster.

I bet your second partition is actually what they call a "recovery partition" and it probably contains your restore disk on it (ie, bundled OS and applications).

If you have a set of OS discs or a restore CD you could go ahead and wipe it clean as long as you back up what you want to keep.

can i put program files on the d part of the drive without changing anything? i mean that the programs will still run. will they?

umm.. wait a minute "rookie" started this thread and now "njkernick" is here?

anyway see how much free space is on d: and depending on how much space is there store your music and\or pictures on d: if you have any.

I kept the program, restore, windows, my documents & Drivers folders in the C drive & moved all my music, pic's, games & other stuff in the D drive. I freed up almost 8G's from C drive which is 15.5 G's. My D drive is 40.2 G's of which i have used 7.24G's moving stuff around. I hope this will be cool....... Much Aloha form the Hawaiian "rookie":D

That's odd that your unprimary partition has so much more space than your primary partition. Was it bought that way? From now on, if you can keep all your things such as music in your D drive, it'll keep your pc healthier since your primary drive have more space to work with now. It'll all run smoother if you don't choke up all the space on your primary C drive like before.;)

That will work. You will find that now that more space on the C primary partition ihas been freed up Windows should run a little smoother. Eventually when you upgrade you will probably want to go with a larger single or maybe a pair of larger drives to provide that extra storage space.

My primary drive with my programs & Driver stuff is my C [email protected] & my D drive with music, pic's & downloads is 40.2G. I want to thank you guyz for your help, my vaio is working good!. I now found a place where I can get answers for those Tough Questions!:o , Much Aloha again!!
