Hey guys im in need of some partition software.

i have a copy of Norton partition magic but it doesnt work in vista so whats a good alternative?

cheers :)

Software while in the OS, or software that is OS-independent?

Gparted is a great tool you can download and burn to a CD as a .iso image. Boot to it and you have a wonderful GUI-based program that gives complete control over your HDD.

Only certain live cd releases of GParted or the Gnome Partition Editor are "platform independent" while even the latest release can resize MS partitions the frown is that those are not cross platform like the 0.3.2.0 and .0.3.3.0 last releases seen at http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=115843&package_id=173828

It's an effective easy to use drive utility once you've used it a few times. The general instructions for use are seen at http://gparted.sourceforge.net/larry/generalities/gparted.htm Some additional screenshots besides the ones seen there can be looked over at http://gparted.sourceforge.net/screenshots.php

Need a program to burn iso disk images onto cd-rs? The free version of BurnOn not a trial seems to be a reliable program for seeing the 35mb download burned to disk. http://www.burnworld.com/burnoncddvd/

Hmmm, can't you just suggest a program instead of detailing every outline ?
Don't bother, PC. Neva's been around enough to know you're a wanna-be:) Sorry...
Yeah i know what you mean

Excuse me if I'm wrong, but did you just call PC eye a "wanna-be" ?
and is there a problem ?

Well, I would think that CF doesn't allow harassment and PC eye looks like he generally knows what hes talking about.

I've been working with GParted for some time and tried different releases while hoping that they would finally release one newer then the 0.3.3.0 version. The other releases now see the "start x" feature but are best suited for experienced Linux users and not for MS use while some get away with resizing partitions only.

For someone who has never used GParted the documentation is well presented there and easy to follow. The screenshots are a good visual guide to consider since the general outlines for the beginner are all on one page there.

Nevakonaza all you do is review the guide there and try a few practice runs once you have a good burn to disk. When going to boot up simply press the enter/return key to see the defaults load at each prompt and you will be at the main gui in no time. If you change things while booting you'll end up having to reboot all over.

Heres a good question. What exactly are you trying to do, resize the partition that Vista is on to create another one or are you just partitioning another drive you installed?

i have a 400Gb Sata2 hard which currently has my os on,but i would like to create a partition (100Gb) just for music.

so when i format my machine as i do like to start over with a fresh install every few months i can just format the partition my os is on and leave the music partition as it is ;)

i could buy another hard drive but i dont see the point,i have over 300gb of space available.

If your using Vista you can shrink it in Vista. In disk Management just right click on the disk and select shrink volume and put in the amount you want to take away, not the size you want i to be. Thats why I asked the question. No need for third party software.

Vista can shrink partitions other than the one Windows is running on with the DM. Besides GParted the good ole GNU people also have another partitioning tool you run while booted in Windows called Parted Magic that runs when first loaded into memory without needing a cd-r to burn an iso image to.

With GParted however you run that with or without any OS already installed. Some additional and better illustrated screenshots for GParted and how to resize an existing partition as well as a link for the Parted Magic tool are seen at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowtoPartition

I still never count on it. Besides when planning to shrink a primary the first advice is to back things up in case something goes bad on you. One little glitch for some reason and... ut ohhh... !

Another to note about the new options added of resizing and even separately seeing partitions formatted or reformatted when booting up with the Vista dvd and starting then canceling the install just to use the optional partitioning tools is still finding that 1-8mb of unallocated drive space in front or in back of the primary. GParted will see that there is 0% unallocated space still seeing what MS hasn't addressed there yet.

If you count on it or not, it will resize the partition that Vista is installed on. And you have been told a hundred times that the 8mbs of unallocated space its there by design its not something that they need to take care of, its for coverting to Dynamic Disk.
