Partitioning a hard drive?

I have had threads about this before and am getting closer and closer to getting it done. I have a 20 gig drive and about 4 of it is free and working with XP on it. I know to go to control panel and to disk managment to partition more but it gets stuck. I make another one called "L" about 5 gigs and it frezzes at 12%. So that means that the next 12% of 5 gigs is bad space. How do I get past this to use the rest of the space on the hard drive? Someone told me to look at it like a tape so I have a good first hour then the next 20 min is bad. So I FF to 1.21 hours of the tape and start using the rest. How is it I make partitioning the same way? How do I jump past the bad part between my good 4 gigs and then the BAD part of the next 12% of the 5 gigs? Thanks a lot in advance and hopefully someone can give me a hand. Thanks :D

Yes but that only defrags the 4 gig part which is all good. I can't defrag anything else because I can't make another partition to defrag because it freezes at 12%. I just need to know how to skip this bad 12% and use the rest of the HD? Thanks and keep the help coming :D

Ya it freezes at the same point which means theres a bad point on my HD...I just need to know how to get past it or is the rest of my HD after the 4 gigs bad? Thanks :D

I think I know how to do that and if I am right it only checks the C: part which I already know is good and runs fine. Its the part after it I wanna check for errors? Thanks and please reply with help to this or a new idea

Anyone at all here able to help me please? I really want to get my computer up and running with a HD more then 4 gigs. Thanks :D

If you have bed sectors on the drive and still have problems making a smaller 4gb partition those sectors are in a location that will prevent a new one. The utilities like Partitiion Magic and a few others might see a new partition. But a new and even larger drive is even better for splitting it into two or more parts especially if you intending the "L" for storage.

One way to determine if bad sectors are there is to download a drive utility found on the manufacturer's support site. Without being able to create a new partition on a drive due to bad portions replacement is the option. A new drive can then be partitioned the way you want it. If you know the make of the drive post it here if you need help with getting the download.
