hi all:),

sorry for the noobness:D but....

I need to know how i can partition my hard drive so that my OS (windows XP pro) exists on one smaller partition and my data on another larger partition.

the reason being that i want to be able to reinstall XP if necessary (I have been having alot of problems with it) without losing all my data.

Is this even possible to do? Will I be able to boot and use both partitions simultaneously?

I have no idea!!!
grateful for any help, thanks

Yes you can create a second partition instead of only one that you have now.

However, with Microsoft's free partitioning tool (FDISK) doing so would destroy all the data on your existing partition because you have to 'start from scratch' with FDISK, by deleting partition 'C', then creating two new ones. Then you would have to re-install Windows and all your applications.

The alternative way is to buy 'Partition Magic' and install it. Run it from within Windows and follow instructions to re-size 'C' to a smaller size, then create new partition 'D' from the new unallocated space. Partition Magic can do all that without destroying the data on 'C', so Windows doesn't have to be re-installed. The usual warning still applies, just in case, back up all your data files before running PM.
