Partitioning Problems

Hey,

Im trying to create two partitions on my NTFS HDD while running XP- (one for OS and programs and files, the other for downloads, as not to infect the rest of my comp should i download a virus)

Anyway, i do not have a workable floppy drive, so booting from floppy is out of the question.

I have tried to follow Microsoft's step by step (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/313348) but that hasnt worked for me.
Microsoft refers to a welcome to setup screen, this does not show up for me. Microsoft also refers to the user being able to chose to repair, install or cancel during setup. When I boot from my disk i dont get any choices, simply press any key to boot from disk and after that the computer proceeds to do everything with out prompting me about anything.

At what point am i supposed to be able to create partitions during the installation? And why am I not given this option?

Im at my wits end...

thanks in advance

You probably have only a 'Recovery CD' supplied by the PC manufacturer. The instructions on the MS website assumes you have a 'proper' Microsoft XP CD'.

But in any event, unless you buy some third-party software such as "Partition Magic", it's not possible to create a second partition using Microsoft's free utilities without destroying the data on the existing partition (in other words you would first have to back up all your own data, then afterwards you would have to re-install Windows and all your applications.

Partition Magic, however, can create a second partition without destroying the existing one. But you are warned to back up all your data just in case (which you should be doing anyway on a regualar basis).

Yes, you are correct, my disk is only a "Recovery CD'.

All my data is backed up, so i doesnt matter if i wipe my hard drive in creating this partition.

Do you know of a free method to create a partitioned hard drive without a working floppy drive?

Again, the process can wipe my hard drive, i dont care, my data is backed up.

thanks again
