Partitioning Question

Hi,

i have a new toshiba laptop which as a single hardrive with a capacity of 300gb but is partitioned into C: drive of 149gb while the other Data(E:) drive of 147gb which contains toshiba HDD folder. For me i find the second drive to large. This is what want to do: bring the 2 drives together to make a single drive, THEN partition them into 2 drives, C: drive with 250gb capacity and the Data(E:) with 50gb. I already have my recovery cd's and i've backed up all my work ect.

So can somebody tell me clearly exactly how i can do what i want to do?

You mean the Data drive has the recovery partition on it? Do you have an actual windows install CD?

Yes the Data drive has the recovery partition, no i just have a recovery cd not an actual windows cd.

I know this is possible because i asked my friend who knows how to repair computers to do this for me once, but i had to pay him, so i want to do this myself.

As long as you have made cd's so that you can reinstall windows along with all the correct drivers then its just a matter of using a program to delete the partitions and then repartition and then install. NOTE: Doing this will get rid of your recovery partition. Or you can use partitioning software to actually move free space from one partition to another. But there is always a chance something can go wrong.

Hi, thanks for your asstance, you have presented 2 methods. The seconds sounds a bit easier but as you said, something could go wrong but as it is only a software issue not hardware i'm not worried as i've backed up everything i need. Therefore, i want to go for the second method, can you tell me the best software that i can download to move free space from 1 partition to another please as some will be better than others.

If however, it does not work, i will go for the first method ask.

You would have to buy a program like Partition Magic, I highly doubt your recovery cd allows you to partition drives.

I did some research and found out thta since i'm using windows vista, there is compatibility issues, will Partition Wizard be able to move space from 1 partition to another?

Great news, i managed to do it. Here is the science bit: after i downloaded partition wizard i removed some space from my Data drive which surprisingly did not afffect my recovery folder. With the unallocated space, i made it into a drive e.g test, and merged it with my c drive. Doing so made my laptop reboot and do the merging stuff and after that i was presented with my desktop screen. I then noticed the new changes which was brillant.

I do have 1 other question i would like to ask though. When my toshiba laptop starts up i also see a program pop up describing that i can use my TOSHIBA Recovery Disc Creator to create a recovery cd so that it can be used to set my laptop back to its 'original factory setting'.

Since i have made changes to the hardrive space, if i do make a new recovery cd, and use it, am i right in saying that it will NOT restore my hardrive to what it is currently? But instead restore it to the original state when i first purchased it?

It will restore it like it is now I believe since there is partitioning program on a recovery cd.

i don't think there is a partion program on my recovery cd, should that make a difference? or are you referring to that if i do make one now, with the partition wizard installed, it would restore it to what it isi now. Hope that makes some sense.

Sorry, I meant to say there is NO partitioning software on a recovery cd. I was really tired last night and couldn't type. If you make recovery cd's now then it should restore it like it is now.
