my hard drive is the SAMSUNG Spinpoint F1 HD502lJ and im having trouble partitioning it. i just want to partition off like 20 gigs of it but im not sure how. ive read many guides on it but my hard drive must be different or something because mine is all considered the primary partition and there isnt any unallocated space. is there supposed to be and can anybody help me out here?

Your drive is fine. Most drives do have all the space partitioned into a single partition. To partition your drive you need to shrink the partition to get the space to partition. I recommend GParted for partitioning. Though I have heard a lot of good things about Vista's partitioner, though I haven't used it much myself. But of course be sure to back up no matter what you do.

hmm well i just downloaded GParted and whenever i open it with winrar it doesnt give me something to install or run. any others you might recommend?

You could try Partition Magic from Powerquest. This isn't freeware though, but it will do the job. I'm not sure if you can download a limited time demo version for free
