partitioning your harddrive?

hey guys i know some people partition their hard drive so that when part of their hard drive crashes or is messed up they have other parts of the same hard drive to work with...how do you partition a hard drive?
 
You do so when installing windows. However, if you've already installed windows, you need to find some other application to do so...

Also, realize if there's a hardware problem with the drive, both/all partitions will go...
 
Partition Magic is a popular application for partitioning hard drives with already installed Windows Operating systems. Although partitioning an already installed OS hard drive, from what I've read, is quite risky, in the sense of it can be very buggy and you could run into various problems. The only way I partition is when I format.
 
If you have an OS installed already, GParted Live Disc is a great free partition utility as opposed to Partition Magic. There is nothing wrong with both, just that Partition Magic isn't free.
