Partitions

Hi all
Just got a new computer with 2 hard drives. The primary C: was partitioned with 100Gb and F: was 400Gb and E: being a seperate drive.

I want to delete the F: and have full capacity on C: so I deleted the partition but how do I now get C: to recognise the full capacity and will this ruin the OS installation.
Basically I want to allocate the 400Gb that was on F: back to C: to make it a 500GB disc

I'm sitting here and waiting :)

You need to use a partitioning utility to resize the partitions. I think GParted allows you to do that...I'm not sure. Other programs include Acronis Disk Director and Partition Magic.

As fair as I know you can only resize partitions with disk management if you have them setup as dynamic.

If you want to combine the partitions without needing to repair/reinstall your OS, you would need to use a partition program, such as Partition Magic. Because right now the 400GB is just set as unallocated space.

Thanks for the info guys. Fortunately or unfortunately when I installed AVG security suite XP threw a wobbler telling me it had to close down all the time due to host file problems so I reformatted and started again.

This way I got rid of that partition so everything will be as I want it now, but that format of 500Gb took nearly 4 hours :(

That sucks.

If you need to manage partitions in the future, download the free trial of Acronis Disk Director. It works well in XP and Vista. GParted is a free, Linux based solution that (I've heard) works good as well.

Thats why you just do a quick format, which takes about 20-60 seconds.

Yea, I saw that option but didn't know which too choose :o

Why have two options if either will do the job:confused:

A full format checks for bad sectors and formats which is why it takes so much longer. A quick format just formats the drive. If you are formatting a new drive then a quick format is fine, if it's an old drive then you might want to do a full.
