password protect a partition.

Hi there folks.
I need to lock a hard drive partition so that it would be in read-only mode,so that only the OS could read the softwares in it.

As i searched in the web i found some encryption softwares, but the problem is that they only work under windows, but soon as you boot the system with a cd than you will be able to format the partiton.

i was wandering if there is a way to make a full protection that would prevent the HD from format.
thanks in advance.

If you've got physical access to the system it's impossible to stop anyone just deleting the contents of your drive, i.e. as you mention a boot CD could be used, drive could be removed etc. There are hardware write blockers available, but not practical for use here. The best way to help prevent anything like this happening is to change the boot order in the BIOS to exclude anything except the HDD and set a BIOS password. You can then install full HDD encryption with a product such as truecrypt to prevent anyone but yourself logging in locally.
Not fool proof by any means but better than nothing!
