password protect computer

im at college and i think when i am out of the room my roomate is using my computer i would like to set passwords on my computer to access it how do i go about doing that? is there programs i need to download or what?
 
go to control panel -> user accounts -> select user -> create a password

or when you boot up, press delete on the post screen and add a startup password in BIOS if it supports it
 
you should also enable the "on resume,password protect" in the screensavers so that your room-mate doesnt mess around when you go out for a while.
 
On the same subject, is there any programmes that can password protect folders??. Like you can put a password on a folder so people cant access it. I am hoping their is a freewhere vertion of this, as I had a version where it was free but after 20 times of using the password it would lock your folder and you would have to buy full prgramme to unlock. So as soo as I found this outIgot rid of it strait away.

The first way will allow your computer to boot up and get to the login screen, and if you have a strong password then that will be the most secure. but the second way will make it so that the computer asks for a password a few seconds after turning it on, but is less secure that way.
 
Also make sure that the administrator account is passworded if you are going to set user passwords - a blank administrator password is an easy way to get into an otherwise protected system.
