Is there any freewear programm out there or a way on windows to password protect a file???? This would be very usefull so then I wont have to worry about my friends finding unwated material as they snoop round my computer.

Also dont want this softwear but is there softwear that alarge companies posses that can get round a password on a **.rar or **.zip file. As well my computer is going in for servicing soon, and I don't want them seeing sensitie documents and files (about 30gig of them) and I don't want to put them all on CD. So I was thinking of putting them in a .rar file and then using a programme to further secure them. I know they wont go looking through my files but you can never be 100% sure what they will do. And its better to be safe than sorry.

WinZip or WinRAR should be able to password protect files, even if you just use the evaluation version (obviously though, it will create a ZIP or RAR file, which may not be exactly what you are after). When trying to hack into password protected files, there are two methods that are used.

The first is called a dictionary attack, where the program basically tries out an enormous list of words and variations on words, in the hope that one of them will be your password.

The second is called a brute force attack. The program will try out every possible combination of letters, numbers and special characters. Eventually, it will find the password, but as you can imagine, with a sufficiently large password (at least 6-8 characters) it will take months or even years.

So, in order to best protect your files you must choose a password that is:
  • Not an actual word, or variation on an actual word (e.g. dont just replace the letter O with the number 0, almost all programs will look for this)
  • Sufficiently long, at least 6-8 characters
  • Has a variety of upper and lower case letters, numbers, and special characters

Yer I got a programme that does this bruteforce attack and that. Wanted ti try and get past a 4 letter password and like 2 hours later had done about 3% of the way lol. And good so they dont have a programme that can just strip a password. Looks like I will have to add them to a .rar file :( but this will take ages as it has to compressafew 5 GB  or so. (will put it on list compresion on a .rar or .zip which will be quicker on lowest compretion???. And yes its not reay what I want. I just want to put a password on a file. So you click a file and it will ask you to enter a password, or something along those lines.
