PC boots but only gets a black screen

Looked at my girlfriend's computer last night. The computer boots but, I think after the windows loading screen the screen goes black and apparently I can't do anything. I looked at set up and boot sequence, ran a hard drive diagnostic which passed and was not sure what else to do. Setup had a quick boot option where compatibility issues could be bypassed, I tried it with that on and off. My best guess is either the hard drive is bad or windows install. I could not find her windows disk to try repairing the install if that is an option. It is a dell with a P4, 1GB Ram, two 160GB Hard drives, Dell. Looking for suggestions on what to do next. Thought about trying my hard drive in the system to see if its the hard drive and may try reformatting or reinstalling windows if a disc shows up. I'll probably pick up the tower tonight and bring it home to work on it.
 
Yes that is the case. I have her computer and my windows disc, I'll see if I can do something with that. Have to find my adapter for my monitor now, darn VGA.
 
Just opened up the thing which was a small pain. It is a refurbished dell dimension 8400. Can't seem to find my windows disc that makes things more difficult.
 
This sounds like my problem. Front light stays green. One capacitor seems to be bulged but I am no expert on the matter. I'll try reseating the graphics card and before I try booting up.
 
The hard drives worked in my pc. Brought it back to friend's house and hooked it up. It actually booted but was running very badly and crashed on me then it kept restarting once it booted up. I cleaned out the tower of dust. I entered safe mode once I could from msconfig could not do it from boot up. Got got the programs suggested in the security section of the forum and will post there. Was a lot of infected files. Also one of the capacitors seemed swollen to me but not an expert on that, although I saw something saying that is an issue with the 8400.
 
actually, this sound like a graphic driver problem. i had the same problem. sometimes when the com starts up or a game is loading, the screen just stay black. all went away when i installed a new driver.
