PC Controllers Configuration

Hey guys, I just wanted to know if any of you have a minute...

Basically, if I bought a third party PC controller (so not microsoft or anything like that) and I had a game on Steam which said it was compatible with Xbox 360 controllers, would I still have to register the buttons on the controller? Or would it be registered automatically?

Edit: I meant like would I have to download a program to configure the buttons on the pads to keys and buttons from the keyboard and mouse, or would it be done automatically by Windows or by the game? :) Thanks

Is it a third party Xbox controller? Or just a generic controller compatible with PC?

If the former, then it should work the same as an Xbox controller.
In either case, you can still map the functions of the keyboard to the controller.
