I know this is not a software fault and is ahardware fault because even after rebooting my pc it randomly freezes when you do a simple task. It does it quite often and i have to turn it off at mains to start it back up. Which bit of hardware do i need to change????????

you did a full reformat and reinstall not just a restore right? I'd say mobo/processor problem, you could also do a chkdsk to make sure it isn't the hard drive

well i used the restore disks to restore evertything back to factory settings...it wipes all of your harddrive and settings and everything to back how it was when you bought....by checkdisk you mean scandisk?? and should i do just standard scan all the full system data and surface scan??? also it happens when i start up any program normally...but sometimes happens if you just leave the pc to do what it wants to....

1. What OS are you using?
2. Have you installed the very latest chipset drivers?'
3. When you run checkdisk/scandisk, set it to do the full system scan.
4. Did you uninstall all of the rubbish programs that you don't want?
5. Have you done a virus scan? My restore discs have a virus built in and the very first program I need to install and run after restoring is the Blaster worm removal tool from Microsoft.
6. There's a chance your CPU is overheating. My old DEC used to freeze up until I ducted cool air through the heatsink directly.

I would suspect your cpu, startup is cpu intensive my fans kick on during startup. The only other time my fans will kick on is if I am video editing or playing a game.

First thing I would check to make sure your cooling fans are working properly and I would also check to make sure your heatsink for your cpu is not clogged with dust. If it is blow it out with a can of compressed air you can buy them for about $5 american.

yeh i noticed it is when the pc starts making a louder hmming sound that the problem occurs...i cleaned out my fans this morning...what is the heatsink and what does it look like..

Your heat sink will look like a metel box with fins or vents on it and will be sitting right on top of your cpu...it should have a fan attached to it.

:( :( :( i just took out the box with fins and yes it had a fan attched...the fan had a little lead which leads to a plug and the whole heatsink is hooked on the computer with the kind am of linkage you have between ram cards and pc...so would that mean the cpu was attched to the heat sink...also i took it out cleaned it..had a LOT of dust put it back in and now it freezes even quicker than before:confused:  everytime i start it up on the start up procudure it freezes...before it used to normally go onto the pc but freeze when i started up something:confused: whats gone worse:confused:

Did you take the heat sink off the cpu? Because thats a NO NO it has thermo paste between the heat sink and the cpu. If ya did you will have to buy some new thermo paste. I told ya to just spray it with compressed air. How old is this computer and what cpu do you have? I am almost sure this is what your problem is!

no i just unscrewed the whole thing from the actual PC...the heatsink is stuck to the cpu i think because on the back it says pentium 3 also its packard bell intel pentinum 3 600MHZ...im pretty sure i didnt seperate the cpu from the heatsink...and i turned on pc today and now it does start up but again when you start a programm up it freezes
