First time I have used this so not sure if doing it right or if posting in the correct section!!

I have a pc running Windows XP Professional. For the last couple of days the pc has started to close down for no reason. This can be just after log on or an hour later. All of a sudden the monitor will go blank and the pc has shut itself down. Have tried scanning for virus but it wont stay on long enough. Any ideas??

Well, by the timescale you are suggesting it sounds like the CPU is getting too hot, bt it could be a whole host of things

RAM: If the section of the RAM that has the windows code in it is corrupted then it will act like this.

HDD: If the HDD has bad sectors and is affecting certain files like win32k.sys then windows wont stay stable for long.

MOBO: Corrupt chips or capacitors blown may cause instability

PSU: Second most common problem, not enough amps on the 12v rail causes massive spurts of instability

CPU: Running too hot will cause the safety feature to be activated that will shut windows down. Check the seating of the processor and check that you havent put too much thermal paste on, too much is a bad thermal dissapator.
