PC not seeing second HD

I have a Vista Ultimate PC with a 1TB HD.
I have installed a new 500GB HD as a backup.
I installed the HD, connected it to a vacant SATA data lead and power lead and rebooted.
I expected the OS to find the new device, but it did not.
If I go to Device Mgr I can find the new HD and it says it is working properly, but it does not show up in Computer.
At this point I have to assume that it is running and connected properly because Device Mgr finds it, but I cannot access it.
Any thoughts?
 
You are right. I went into Admin Services > Computer Mgmt > Disk Mgmt and went thropugh the process of giving it a drive letter and formating it.

Seem to be working fine now. Thanks!
