PC problem

Hello forum,

I am here because my PC's monitor will not turn on, or be recognized by the computer, so I cannot log in. A while ago our computer starting getting blue screens if we did too much activity on the PC, or ran programs that was too much for it. So we switched from our graphics card, unaware that it was not powerful enough (we were told differently) to our motherboard, which worked great; Photoshop CS5, GIMP, Internet, my game creators and my writing programs. But recently, the computer would turn off randomly but not commonly. It mostly happened in the day when GIMP was loaded, or the Zune software. By turn off, I mean it would act like the power went off but nothing would be hot. We were advised to have it cleaned, which we did. Fans all work, blow really great and everything. And then we turned out PC on and it started to act weird.

First loading GIMP glitched the screen really bad, froze the keyboard and mouse and pixelized everything -- but I only noticed this when GIMP was loaded. We couldn't turn the PC off normally and tried the reset button. But it would not work either, so we flipped the switch and turned it off. A little later we turned it back on and the "welcome" screen for Windows 7 was pixelized as well and would stay on the welcome screen and not go any further. Again, we turned it off.

Now the PC monitor will not recognize the PC. It says "no signal" but everything is plugged in and working fine. For two days it has been doing this, so we went to another PC that was literally perfectly fine, just ran Windows XP. So we plugged the mouse into it and the keyboard and turned the second PC on. It won't recognize the monitor either. Now we are stuck and was hoping someone could help us out.

We have noticed that the mouse does not work when we plug it into the PC, but does with Labtops. And our keyboard is a P2 port (I believe that is what they are called -- please forgive my ignorance on the subject). Is it possible its the keyboard/mouse that is the problem? If not, I would kindly appreciate any suggestions or advice!

PC Specs:
Windows 7, 32-Bit OS
HP w1707 screen (tried DVI and VGA, nothing works)
ASUS motherboard
black Logiteck keyboard
black Logiteck mouse

Common uses:
Photoshop on Sunday and Saturday | GIMP rarely
Microsoft Office 2011 = Extremely common
Monzilla Firefox = extremely common
Zune = a little below common
(PC games were also played, but were pretty uncommon)

P.S

We were also dual booting Linux on another hard drive.

If you think its the mouse, then unplug it and boot up the system to see if the monitor works. If the monitor doesn't work then you have a bad monitor. Does the mouse work on a different pc. You may just have a bad motherboard/psu in your system causing the monitor and mouse issue.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to reply to my thread. :)

We have tried different monitors that worked perfectly before the problem as well. We even tried using another PC entirely, with the only parts from the old PC being the keyboard and mouse. I have taken the mouse and used it on another computer and labtop, it works fine. I have not tested the keyboard on other PCs because the only computers that currently work do not take its type. I have booted without the mouse plugged in, and it says "no signal".

What is a PSU? I am familiar with what the motherboard is, but not that. :o

Thanks again!

Ah. It seems to be running fine, I think. I am not sure for the first PC that the problem started with, but for the second PC its practically brand new and worked perfectly before the keyboard and mouse attachment. We only used it twice before now, and once was just to see what was on it.

I have heard RAM could cause a simple problem, but I am unsure of how to check or fix the issue. I also heard it could be the monitor, and if so, why does the same thing happen on a new PC with an old keyboard/mouse?

If any could offer any help, I would be very appreciative. :)

Well, I believe we have figured out the problem.

It seems a capacitor got hot and came undone on the mobo which caused the entire problem for the computer, as well as the battery on it (a small circle battery). The capacitor being loose made it so the monitor, mouse and keyboard would not turn on or be recognized by the computer. The battery is fried, I think.

My father is still looking into it though. Is there a way to fix this, the capacitor and replace the battery, instead of buying a new PC?

You can replace the capacitor if you have soldering iron exprience and the cmos battery can be easily replaced.

Oh? This is good news! Where might one find replacements for those parts, if I may ask?

Thanks!

Ah! Good thing, there is a Radio Shack an hour or two away from where I live. Should I look for compatible pieces, or does any work?

Thanks!

Take the old capacitor with you to match exactly. The cmos battery should be a cr2032 which you can get anywhere that has batteries, like walmart, home depot, grocery stores usually carry them too.

Oh! Thank you very much for the help johnb35! I'm going to try and get this PC back to better shape as soon as I can!

Thanks!
