PC sees 1GB memory as 32mb? Need some help

Nothing. The rest of the RAM is filled with the operating system and other mapped memory devices. Perfectly normal.

I have this PC right here. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...941&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=459879

I installed 2 PC2700 1GB memory sticks in to the PC. When I go to the setup, it recognizes it at 32mb and the other slot empty. I got the right memory that's compatible with the motherboard. I tried switching them around and trying one memory stick at a time, but it still sees it as 32mb. What should I do?

So your saying that after upgrading to two 1 gb. sticks it will only read them in one slot plus only shows it as 32mb?

Uh what? There are only a few cases where RAM should read as less than the amount you installed.

1. Onboard video taking some of the RAM
2. You are out of address space (ie 4GB doesn't show up as 4GB on a 32bit OS)

Otherwise it is not normal. Especially if 2GB turns into 32MB. His system has onboard video that can allocate up to 64MB of memory. So assuming the onboard video is allocating as much as it can of the 2GB, that would leave 1984MB (1.94GB)

What size stick did you have in before? And did it work okay then. Is the memory a off the wall brand that you had bought? And did you buy them New not used. Maybe, make sure there is no duxt or debris in the slots.

I had 512MB in that I am using now it works fine. I bought them used. I am not sure of the brand, I bouth them on ebay. On the sticker it says 1GB PC 2700 333MHZ DDR DIMM. I am also getting a new power supply, a 600W, I currently have a 250W. Would that help anything?

I'm wondering if you might have gotten high density RAM. If you look on the RAM chips you'll see a code (ie K4H510438D-UCCC). Can you post it here?

Yeah that looks like high density to me (128x4).

Oh man. This explains everything

http://www.overclock.net/faqs/113885-info-what-difference-between-low-density.html

* LOW DENSITY modules have 100% compatibility with ALL systems and ALL chipsets.
* HIGH DENSITY modules only have 10% compatibility and are VERY SLOW.

This is also why almost all Branded-Name systems such as Apple/MAC, Compaq/HP, Dell and IBM only uses LOW DENSITY modules.
However 90% of eBay are plagued with High-Density 1GB modules at very low price, and you will be wasting your precious time and money having to return those high density 1GB modules to your seller for refund. So AVOID those 'High-Density - 128Mx4 config' 1GB modules which is usually UNBRANDED and is NO NAME!
