Can anyone please offer me some advice before I scream very loud. I have just changed my heatsink and fan for a much quieter more efficient model. I cleaned off the old compound with a kitchen towel and then applied some of the thermal compound that was on the base of the new heatsink, to the CPU that is. Now the pc will go no further that the initial screen showing the BIOS version, it says checking memory and detecting drives but will not even let me into the BIOS. Is it possible I have damaged the CPU while cleaning it for the new heatsink. I have reseated the CPU three times now and still it will not boot. Your help will be much appreciated, many thanks. :)

I don't think you damaged the CPU unless you pushed very hard the towel on it...
Inspect the mobo: look at the capacitors near the CPU slot. Probably one of them was kicked out from his place during the operation.
