PC Won't Boot Up

My pc has stopped booting up; power lights and fans come on and hd is spinning but no beeps and nothing on the monitor.
I've followed the advice on this and other forums and tried these fixes;
Switched off power and held down pc on button for a minute.
Removed one of the two RAM cards, then removed the remaining one and replaced the first.
Reseated all cards, soundcard, graphics card etc.
Unplugged dvd drive.
Finally I reseated the motherboard battery. The pc powered up and worked correctly after resetting bios - once. When I tried to restart,the same problem recurred.
I then got a "new" battery from my local computer shop - in fact they didn't have any new ones so the technician gave me a spare, I don't know how old. I put this in and again the pc worked once but would not restart.
Finally I tried a brand new battery with the same outcome - started once but no restart.
Can anyone suggest a solution?
 
Is this a custom built computer or store bought? If this is a recent build, you may want to assemble it outside of the case to see if it works correctly. If it still don't work then you have a bad motherboard.

It was custom built to my specs at the local computer shop about 4 years ago. No problems with it until now.
 
Just tried the last option, unplugging all non essential cards etc, but no luck.
Can anyone clarify what the exact problem could be here- a defective motherboard, or might it be a power supply issue or something else? I can't understand why the pc boots one time only after changing the battery, could it be a bios problem?
