PC wont boot without monitor attached

i have an older machine that i want to boot up to back up files too etc.. i set it to "halt on no errors" in the BIOS, so it will boot up without a keyboard or mouse plugged in, but it refuses to do anything unless there is a monitor plugged in, if i hook a monitor up too it it works fine, but thats a hassle, as i dont have a spare, or room for it.

Have you tried another graphiccard? I know that some graphiccards won't initialize if they don't have a monitor. If the graphiccard doesn't initialize the computer will just "hang" during bootinitialization.
