PCI E power cord adapter

I just got an adapter to go from 2 of those 4 prongs on my psu to my 7900GT, but I only have one spare, and I don't want to unplug my case fan. Could I just use on of the two plugs and still run my card at a decent power, and not worry about killing it?
 
Yeah I just tried it and the card didn't receive any extra power. So now I don't have a running DVD drive :( Whatever, I use CDs anyway, except for installing some games
