Hi everyone, its been 3 years since my last build, so im rusty... what can I use these pci-e x1 for?

Can you install soundcards on these little slots? I see that newer boards have less pci slots and more of these little guys... thx!

yup you can you them like a old type PCI slot so you can put sound cards, networks cards, TV cards.

PCI-E 1x has replaced PCI since its a lot faster. i think PCI has a bandwidth of something link 1-1.5 Gb/s and PCI-E 1x can do like 8Gb/s but dont quote me on those figures.

Sound cards/Firewire/USB/LAN/SATA and IDE and others. I would say in a few years it will replace the PCI slot completely.

o sweet, before i posted people were saying they were useless, to put your spare change and to give you space between your pci-e slots

If you're planning a build - and intend to use a pciex1 card - make sure you look closely at your MOBO heatsinks - to see if you can use yours.

I was planning on using my pciex1 for a TV tuner card - and after getting all the parts - I realized my MOBO heatsink would make the use of that slot close to impossible - except for a very shortly designed piece of hardware.

I had a spare pcix8 & pcix16 slot open - so I used one of those for the same job - but it was a learning experience for future builds to give a good look over to the MOBO if you're planning on using all the slots of a MOBO you are purchasing.

I doubt it, since PCI is an open standard it's bound to stick around for some time... I might be wrong though.

Anyways, as peeps here have mentioned, they're used for lower-bandwidth devices, pretty much all that PCI is used for at the moment.

Due to the way PCI-E works with its lanes and stuff it's entirely possible to put a graphics card (or for that matter, any PCI-E device) in it; all you need to do is to saw the end of the slot open so you can fit the card in. Not a good idea since with only 1 lane you'll only have enough bandwidth for low-end graphics card any other devices with low bandwidth requirements and you risk damaging the motherboard / making the slot totally useless, but just pointing out, it can (technically) be used for anything PCI-E.

There are video cards available for x1 slots :P And capture cards too; I was considering purchasing a nice HD WinTV soon rather than a DVD Recorder with an ASTC tuner in it :P

It might be a little longer then a few (2 or 3) years. Most board are already down to just having 2 PCI slots. It will be like ISA slots being replaced by PCI. I would say in 2 or 3 years there will be some without any or just down to one slot left.
