PCI Express Slots

if you have no desire to run SLI or Crossfire is their any need to have 2 PCI express 2.0 slots?

If a motherboard has a AMD chipset that may or may not support Crossfirex or hybrid the one that runs off of onboard video does it need to have 2 PCI express 2.0 slots to use crossfire hybrid it just have 1 to do it?

My motherboard has a wierd layout for the PCI-E slots, so i end up using my soundcard in the other x16 slot slot to keep it away from my GPU. the x1 slot is right next to the GPU and together they build up a lot of heat.

So i suppose the only reason you would need more than one x16 2.0 slot would be for other add in cards that you want to keep away from your GPU. but newer motherboards are aware of this and put any x1 slots further away.

What if i bought a Mobo with a northbridge with 790GX which should support Crossfire Hybrid which runs off of the onboard sound video card. Now this is a weird question but would the mobo still need the 2 x16 2.0 slots to run in Crossfire hybrid?
