pci sata controllers

Ok.. I've been on a couple forums asking this but I think this is the right place to ask.

abit kt7a-raid
512 mb pc 133 sdram
amd 1.2 tbird (NOT ocing.. yet)

I want to add sata drives and I think it's pci 2.2 compliant..do you think this mobo could handle 2 sata + 3-4 IDE without problems? I'm thinking win xp or server 2003 as the os. will only use this as a server, so just continuous transfers.

What will help when throwing a server type case together is having a server type processot along with a good stable power supply. If you intend to leave it running most or all day and night on upto a 24/7 basis additional cooling methods to kept running temps down is a consideration there. You would certainly pushing the old TBird cpu there to keep that case going. On a new build the AMD Opteron line of cpus would be more suitable for that.

im most likely gonna buy the best socket a cooler available for the cpu. a psu upgrade is definitely a consideration as well. what OS would you recommend?

Even XP would be a slow runner on less then a good XP2600 Barton cored AMD model cpu. The current hardware is more or less intended for desktop not server orientated application. To see a server case up and running for the 24/7 schedule you would be far better off looking at a new build. Once a good selection of hardwares is made you can select the best OS depending on need there. For business application most would go with a Server 2003 or newer while others might prefer XP Pro.

ok.. my case is should be good enough.. but just incase, is there a way to fit a mATX into an ATX, or is it too weird with the screws? (just curious in case I find a great deal on an mATX)..

I'm most likely gonna upgrade the PSU..

but onto the mobo/cpu...

i've been checking out some sites and they have the AMD Geode NX or something like that for about 80 for mobo/cpu..

I've been thinking that I want a sempron..

I know a couple of months ago, outpost had a sempron 2800 with mobo for $79.99 and free shipping.. I'm kicking myself for not getting that :(

I've looked at tigerdirect but they have rebates and theyre unreliable with rebates.. newegg no good deals on mobo combos.. same with geeks.com

any suggestions? lol

An ATX case will hold a microATX motherboard, but not vice versa

I've been thinking that I want a sempron..
Find an old opty.

what is considered an "old" opteron.. i went to pricewatch and they are all F'ing expensive... cheapest mobo/opty was like 175

i know a sempron will do the trick.. basically i want 5-6 harddrives and it to run 24/7 over a lan.

i'm hoping to get mobo+cpu for no more than $80 if possible.. this is'nt needed IMMEDIATELY but maybe within a couple of weeks.

I'm still kicking myself for not getting that one from outpost grrrr

I just saw AMD Atholon XP3200+ cpus still being sold for as high as $167! The retail price for that model in 2004 was $179.95. The Opteron line of cpus are still too high right now for the next case I am planning on with the OPT185 seen at $1,100. You may find a lower model Atholon or probably used one at Ebay for about $50-.

You will also want something to monitor system temps especially with the older model cpus that run a slightly higher voltage then the newer line. One example here was the Atholon XP3200+ rated for 1.65v that was seeing 1.71 in the bios as well as with SpeedFan. The newer AMD64 3500+ rated rougthly for 1.37v is seeing 1.4v. But the older Atholons had a higher temp threshold with the 2600+ maxing at 90C and the 3200+ at 85C.
