PCI vs PCI-E

I'm looking to get a new vid card. Whats the difference between PCI and PCI express? Is it a different slot on my motherboard?

Will a PCI-E card run in a PCI slot?
 
If you have seen both cards you will see that there is NO way in the world a PCI-E card can fit in a PCI slot and vice versa without modifications. Wink wink. I saw a card "cut down to size" literal to fit in a pci slot, had me laughing for half an hour. The PCI slot is really really old and the memory bandwith is really really limited, its even older than AGP. At the lower end of the market it not noticable, like a PCI 5200 and an AGP 5200 is about the same in terms of performance, however when things start to heat up and move towards the high end, the PCI interface will not keep up, that is why you don't see PCI 7900GTs or PCI X800XTs, if there were, they will not be very good.
 
Does your motherboard have an AGP slot? If it doesn't then think about upgrading your computer if you want to play games.
 
It has an agp slot. Just not a PCI-E slot. From what Ive heard, AGP's are not being used much..prob time to upgrade.

I'm not sure why, but I don't like AGP cards that much. In my opinion, PCI-E is the way to go. You'll find a lot more PCI-E cards then AGP. PCI-E is also cheaper.

Not really, the AGP card is usually more expensive when the same cards supports both AGP and PCI-E

Mainly because of supply and demand. Many of the AGP cards such as the x800/x850 series, arent in production anymore, and are even harder to find for AGP.

Or if you compare the new AGP cards such as the x1300 or 7800GS, to their PCI-E counterparts, they are more expensive since the demand for them arent as high as they are for PCI-E.

For example, this AGP Chaintech 7600GS costs $130 before MIR.
However, this PCI-Express Chaintech 7600GS with a Zalman cooler costs $126.

Well they did just introduce the x1950PRO for AGP, as well as the 7800GS and x1x1300PRO :rolleyes:
