It depends, some internal WiFi have very good antennas, and pick up strong signals. But then again, some PCI ones are better since the antennas are outside of the chassis. I would say there fairly equal.
 
How about just generally. Bandwich, range, stability, etc. On every single factor

Besides, isn't it a lot easier to upgrade a pci network adaptor than the one built into the mobo?
 
If you're talking purely desktop, then I'd have to go with PCI... Easier to upgrade to another format, can also add a higher gain antennae to the card as well... :)
 
Then I would say PCI as well, only because they have large external antennas. The ones built into laptops actually have really good range to.
