Pci-x

Is PCI-X even used for anything?

Some motherboards are starting to include it.
I'm not sure if there's any use for it?

Well PCI-X is just an improved PCI slot.

The theoretical maximum amount of data exchanged between the processor and peripherals with PCI-X is 1.06 Gb/s, compared to 532 Mb/s with standard PCI. PCI-X is generally backward compatible with PCI, meaning that you can, for example, install a PCI-X card in a standard PCI slot.

PCI-X looks like an experimental parallel bus meant for servers.
PCI-E looks like a practical serial bus meant for everyone else.

It's not experimental.

And really, I don't think there's even a need for PCIX technology anyways. PCIe is flourishing.

PCI-X is the enhanced PCI or PCI plus that is surpassed by the AGP and PCI-Express. That was the attempt to boost performance on older boards without AGP capability. Eventually AGP will also drift into distant memory.
