Hello...
I have been wanting too upgrade my geforce FX 5900. I have found a good deal for geforce 6800 and now a new problem has set up... I need a new motherboard. I heard that a PCI-E motherboard can only work with a CPU that is 64 FX ( for AMD) and I do not have a 64 FX processor.. (I have AMD athlon XP 3200+. Do I need a new CPU to work with this PCI-E motherboard and 6800?

You dont need an FX for PCI-E. I dont think that there are any motherboards out there that support PCI-E and Athlon XP's, so most likely you will have to upgrade your CPU as well. I would recommend a 939 Series CPU and motherboard.

well if you got an Athlon 64 3000+, that would cost around $130, and a motherboard would cost you around $80.

Why do you want PCI-E anyways? If you had to upgrade your whole system, i would stick with AGP.

Well.. as I told you I am getting a new graphics card... a 6800 GT... which is a PCI-E card... meaning you need a PCI-E enabled motherboard for this card to work...

I have to agree with OMEGA. Why not just buy an AGP card (they come in the 6800 flavor also) and use the motherboard, CPU that you have.

Well first of which.. AGP cards are becoming more and more un-usable. PCI-E is the new generation and by getting an AGP 6800, soon it will be just useless.

Sounds like you answered your own question. Now if you say that AGP is becoming more unusable, then you would of course say that your XP3200+ is facing the same fate. If getting a new motherboard, might as well get a faster CPU if it is in the budget. BTW, no item is unusable, if used for the intended purpose that you bought it for. Now it might indeed be falling behind in techology.

an AGP 6800GT performs exactly the same as the PCI-E 6800GT.
