Pentium 4 520 OC

Okay, so I'm OC'ing a Pentium 4 520. I got it up to 3.5GHz from 2.8 so far, and it seems fine until I run Prime95. Once it gets up to 100% load, it begins to slowly underclock itself to around 3.44GHz, and then Prime95 will begin to report errors and programs will being to crash. Sometimes the system crashes. When I stop the Prime95 torture test, all goes back to normal. 3.5GHz again. I already bumped my voltage up to 1.475v from 1.425v, so I'm beginning to doubt that it needs more voltage. My temps stay in the mid 60s Celsius during 100% load, and they spike over into the mid 70s at times. I've already tried to raise the northbridge voltage, but that didn't help. My RAM is actually currently clocked 25MHz under stock speeds to 375MHz because that's the closest ratio my motherboard allows without having to overclock the RAM. Why do you think it's underclocking itself and why do you think it's so unstable?

Have you disabled intel speedstep?

By the way, i have a pentium 4 524 here i might try overclocking for kicks and giggles :D

Speedstep's the thing that halves the multiplier when it's idling, isn't it? I'll look that up in my CPU configuration when I get the chance. I don't think it's on, though, since it's not halving the multiplier when it idles, or doing anything to the clock speed at all. It only decreases it around 50MHz, and only on high loads. Just got my new cooler in the mail today, so when I get the chance to install that I'll see if it helps at all, but I don't really think me temps are outrageous, especially for a Presshot. :)

BTW, that 524 should be a beast at overclocking. I think that's the one that has the slow FSB and what I remember being around a 20+ multiplier.

I've got the chip right here in my hand :D

intel '04
pentium 4
524 sl9ca malay
3.06ghz/1m/533/04a

So it's only 533mhz fsb.

Oh, you want to disable Intel Speedstep, thermal die throttling and C1E in the BIOS :good:

So I think that speedstep isn't enabled, but C1E is, if I remember right. What does that do, exactly, btw?

I believe C1E is another power saving feature. It's voltage/ratio throttling IIRC
Thought it was something like that. Is that why my voltage fluctuates so much? I'll set it to run at 1.475v, but then it will fluctuate from the low 1.4s into the 1.5s. I don't see why C1E would overvolt it though. Still, it may be undervolting it when it needs more voltage.

Well, I disabled the energy-saving functions and it seems to be more stable. Thanks guys! I'll update you with more info if it's still having problems.
